The Dragunov SVU (Russian:, Snayperskaya Vintovka Ukorochennaya, Short Sniper Rifle) is a bullpup configuration SVD sniper rifle. The SVU was developed to meet the needs of the security forces of the Russian Ministry of Interior, as the OMON. The SVU was first seen in use in the first Chechen War. Originally, the plan was to modernize aging SVD slightly, but eventually realized that the configuration of the weapon would have to be completely altered, resulting in the creation of the Special Victims Unit.
A muzzle brake was added that could absorb up to 40% of energy and a stock with laminar elastic spring was not rigidly connected to the receiver. The sound of rifle were also improved by adding a sound suppressor which could reduce the sound level of 150 decibels making it easier for the shooter. Other improvements over the main SVU swine vesicular disease, the replacement of the stock, pistol grip, trigger and the mounting of the hearing, and shortening the barrel 100 mm achieved the perfect balance to the gun.
Around 1991 the Russians developed a mild variant of the Special Victims Unit, the SVU-A. Whereas the SVU is semi-automatic, the SVU-A (the one representing automatic) is a automatic rifle. In this rifle the center of gravity is increased with the addition of an extended front bipod mounted on the receiver.
