The LCD screen is the window to the computer. In many ways the choice of the screen is an important factor in determining what kind of laptop you will to achieve.
There are different sizes of LCD screens that can be achieved with a given laptop. Let's say you wanted to buy a Dell D610. I'm using this example because it is an older model that many people are familiar with. D610 screen is 14.1 "and that is the screen size is only get with the D610, because the physical size of the laptop. So if you look at a 15.1 "screen would not be able to get a D610, as not done. In this case, you'd have to go to a totally different laptop.
You still have an option on the LCD screen resolution. The resolution is the number of pixels available for display to be expressed in terms of number of pixels on the horizontal axis and the number on the vertical axis. I believe the choice of the resolution is in many ways more important than the size of the screen. Quick note here, if you have a very high resolution a small display of objects on the screen is very small. Similarly low resolution on a large screen will make objects appear larger.
The D610 that I was talking earlier with 14.1 "LCD screen is available in two resolutions. The first resolution is XGA (Extended Graphics Array) or 1024 x 768. The other option is the SXGA + (Super Extended Graphics Array Plus) or 1400 x 1050 resolution. I personally prefer the SXGA + screen, because it is able to see more web page on the screen without scrolling, but the characters are much smaller and could be a problem for some people to read. Some manufacturers laptops that offer a selection of screen resolutions so be sure to look at different options before buying.

So the resolution you choose? I found it is a personal preference for most people. I have worked with many different laptops and found that the minimum resolution should have is the XGA or 1024 x 768. For the most part most web pages, fit very well in this resolution without much lateral panning. Occasionally there is a site that requires moving from one place to another, but not often. My favorite WSXGA screen resolution is 1280 x 854 on a 14.1 "screen. Look at resolutions as much as possible and find the best for you.
