They were in search of the large amount of heat released from households that are cultivating marijuana (all lamps make a great big heat signature). This is the synopsis of the case, Kyllo v. United States, 533 U.S. 27 (2001), argued that the use of a thermal imaging device from public view to control heat radiation of a person's home was a "search" within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment, and therefore requires a warrant. Because police in this case had a court order, the Court overturned the conviction Kyllo for growing marijuana.
